What is a Flexitank?

A flexitank is a bulk liquid container for use in a shipping container. Flexitanks, also known as ‘Flexibags’, are large flexible containers which transform the conventional shipping container from a dry goods carrier into a safe and efficient bulk liquid transport container. Flexitanks offer a superior alternative to ISO tank containers for shipping juices, oils, food-grade liquids and nonhazardous chemicals around the world.

 

1. Larger Quantities than IBC’s & Barrels

Unlike drums and IBC’s, flexitanks are easy to fill up at once, you don’t have to fill up multiple containers and get them onto a truck, with flexitanks you fill them once – inside of the shipping container for efficient and effective use, meaning higher volumes of liquid can be shipped at one time.

1 FLEXITANK = 85 BARRELS

A Flexitank can hold much more product in one go. On average, they hold 24,000 litres – speeding up the loading process by filling only one tank, compared to a barrel which holds 207 litres, meaning you would need 85 barrels for only one flexitank!

2. Economies of Scale

Flexitanks allow you to take advantage of economies of scale when shipping your product – allowing for cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint with logistical advantages and are in most cases cheaper to operate.

 

In a recent interview with FreightWaves, SIA CEO, Damien McClean cites the example of bulk wine shipping, “You’ll get 9,000 bottles of wine into a 20-foot container. In a flexitank, the 24,000 litres it holds, is the equivalent to around 30,000 bottles” adding that flexitanks also offer companies much more flexibility; citing an example of a winery that was shipping 60% red wine and 40% white wine. “A parcel tanker would have to be all red or all white,” he pointed out, emphasising the impact of economies of scale when using a flexitank for bulk liquid shipping.

3. Eco-Friendly

SIA FLEXITANKS – 2019: A YEAR IN REVIEW

2019 was a great year for SIA, as we enjoyed growth in all regions and the outlook for the flexitank market in general in 2020 is very good. We are now active in 63 countries worldwide – an unapparelled global support system. In the words of Richard Branson “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”.   It seems that the more we prepare the luckier we get! 

There are many success stories to appreciate from 2019 of which are detailed below. 

 State of the Art Facilities Opened in Malaysia  

2019 saw the opening of SIA Flexitanks state of the art office and warehousing facilities in Malaysia. This major step forward is a testament to the remarkable progress made by SIA Asia.

SIA Flexitanks Leading the Market in USA & CANADA 

A major development of 2019 saw SIA Flexitanks Ltd approved on the Canadian Rail Network along with other major USA rail networks such as the Norfolk Southern rail, the CSX and the BNFS Railway networks. Innovation at SIA 

2019 was a very innovative year at SIA Flexitanks with the arrival of two new products, yet to be announced publicly. Trials of these innovations will be finalised in early 2020 when they will be announced in our market place. Team SIA is confident that the innovative products will be a popular choice within our existing market place and confident of the forecasted growth into new markets. 

     

World Bulk Wine Exhibition 

In December, SIA attended the World Bulk Wine Exhibition and took the opportunity to meet with a wide range of wine shippers to discuss the plans for the year ahead.  

Industry insiders handling 80% of the world’s bulk wine production were in attendance. The 11th edition of the biggest world fair devoted to bulk wine hosted more than 260 wineries from 24 different countries worldwide.

2019 COA Meeting – HAMBURG 

SIA CEO, Damien McClean visited Hamburg for the meeting of the Container Owners Association (COA) flexitank division. The focus of the meeting was on industry sustainability and the environment. SIA have proposed a new scheme where the industry pool our resources to make flexitank recycling more economically viable and stressed the importance of increasing the viability for companies to recycle flexitanks. Find out more.

SIA Developing a Sustainable Flexitank Environment  

SIA Flexitanks work with our customers to develop a circular economy to recover, reuse and recycle our flexitanks in utilizing up-cycling by mechanical recycling, chemical recycling and thermal recovery, with bulkheads also being collected and reused.

 

At the 2019 COA (Container Owner’s Association) meeting in Germany, SIA Flexitanks stressed the importance of increasing the viability for companies to recycle flexitanks. SIA Flexitanks suggested to use the COA as the disposal coordinator; where all flexitank companies can combine their flexitanks for disposal to reduce costs and consequently the carbon footprint of our industry.

 

In terms of ecological sustainability, SIA Flexitanks will show how the flexitank is a greener solution than the alternative methods of transportation of Drums and IBC totes. As a member of the COA, we are already compliant with environmental standard ISO 14001.

Eco-Friendly Flexitanks

Recycling is a viable option for the majority of flexitanks, which are made from Polyethylene, an oil-based product.

Recycled flexitanks can be easily turned into resin and used for the manufacture of non-virgin plastic applications, usually recycled as traffic cones.
