What is a Flexitank?
A flexitank is a bulk liquid container for use in a shipping container. Flexitanks, also known as ‘Flexibags’, are large flexible containers which transform the conventional shipping container from a dry goods carrier into a safe and efficient bulk liquid transport container. Flexitanks offer a superior alternative to ISO tank containers for shipping juices, oils, food-grade liquids and nonhazardous chemicals around the world.
1. Flexitanks Offer Larger Quantities than IBC’s & Barrels
Unlike drums and IBC’s, flexitanks are easy to fill up at once, you don’t have to fill up multiple containers and get them onto a truck, with flexitanks you fill them once – inside of the shipping container for efficient and effective use, meaning higher volumes of liquid can be shipped at one time.
1 FLEXITANK = 85 BARRELS
A Flexitank can hold much more product in one go. On average, they hold 24,000 litres – speeding up the loading process by filling only one tank, compared to a barrel which holds 207 litres, meaning you would need 85 barrels for only one flexitank!

2. Flexitanks Give You Economies of Scale
Flexitanks allow you to take advantage of economies of scale when shipping your product – allowing for cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint with logistical advantages and are in most cases cheaper to operate.
In a recent interview with FreightWaves, SIA CEO, Damien McClean cites the example of bulk wine shipping, “You’ll get 9,000 bottles of wine into a 20-foot container. In a flexitank, the 24,000 litres it holds, is the equivalent to around 30,000 bottles” adding that flexitanks also offer companies much more flexibility; citing an example of a winery that was shipping 60% red wine and 40% white wine. “A parcel tanker would have to be all red or all white,” he pointed out, emphasising the impact of economies of scale when using a flexitank for bulk liquid shipping.
